disappointment as love, or, on having an asian mother

This Week in Reading: The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan I reread The Joy Luck Club this week and cried the whole time. Probably the most famous book about Asian American women, by an Asian American woman, The Joy Luck Club follows the lives of four Chinese mothers and their four Chinese American daughters. Each chapter is told from a different perspective, describing each woman’s secret hardships and unknown traumas. It is a book about being a daughter, about the ways we have failed to understand the things our mothers so fervently tried to teach us, about the ways we fail to understand each other.
